Sume – a buddhistic relic
The niche of Churumal-Burgannig, carved into the rock, is quite small. It is 1-meter-high, 60 centimeters wide, and 86 centimeters deep. On the gray stone of its back wall, an ancient master has carved a bas-relief image of Buddha and two Bodhisattvas, with the silhouettes of loyal guardians standing in intimidating poses on the left and right. The niche is framed by a grid of red lines. The silhouettes of loyal guardians are visible on the left and right. This remarkable monument of Buddhist art is believed to date back to the 13th century.
In 1717, the niche was visited by members of a Krasnoyarsk military and topographic expedition led by Andrey Eremeev and Ivan Nashivoshnikov, who were known as "boyar children." They discovered bows and arrows, barley grains, and strips of blue and black paper with mysterious golden and silver symbols. Later, it was revealed that these were Tibetan prayers. Four years later, Dmitry Sharov, a Krasnoyarsk Cossack, visited the Chaa-Khols Niche. He reported to the voivode: "There was a statue of a Buddha above the door, and it was broken off and taken away." In 1726, the voivode sent Cossacks to Tuva again, instructing them to visit, describe, and draw the Buddhist niche in detail, and bring back the inscriptions. Ivan Poilov and Tonoka Strogulin carried out this task. In 1881, the niche was visited by the Russian archaeologist A. V. Andrianov. During the Soviet era, it was examined and described by Professor L. R. Kyzlasov.
The monument of Buddhist art from the 13th century can now be seen only once a year, during the release of water from the Sayano-Shushensk Reservoir. The rest of the time, the Buddhist chapel carved into the Sume rock, which is shaped like a niche, is underwater.
